Speed Reading For Everyone
Whether you are a college student who needs to make sure that all of your reading gets done, or if you simply want to be able to assimilate material faster, you'll find that one of the most important skills that you pick up is speed reading. Many people believe that the speed that they read at is something that they cannot change, while nothing could be farther from the truth. Reading is a skill, and like any skill, it can be improved upon with a little bit of effort. Speed reading is easy once you find a technique that works for you.
First, think about any book that you've read recently. Were all parts of the book equally engaging, or were there bits that were seemed less interesting. While we are told in school that we need to read every part of the book, this is only partially true. Be aware that most books have bits of filler, connecting information, meanderings, illustrations and tangents, and learn to recognize them. When you can identify a segment of your reading material as more superfluous, you'll find that your speed increases without forcing your comprehension to suffer.
Inference is another valuable subskill of speed reading. If you read the line 'Even a stopped clock', you know it is likely to be followed by 'is right twice a day'. You can skip past these things easily once you are in the habit of spotting them. A lot of smaller words can be passed over as well without losing the context. Keep practicing this skill, it is one of the most valuable in the arsenal of a speed reader.
Try practicing your speed reading by playing this game. Using your finger or an index card, try 'racing' your eyes across the text in competition with the card or finger. This is an excellent method to train ones self in the techniques of speed reading. Start slow and gradually increase the pace at which you move through the text. This is a method anyone can use to rapidly increase their reading rate.
Take some time to think about all the benefits that you can get from speed reading. For instance, the human brain is set up to study in 20 minute bursts. When you speed read, you can fit more information in during the first valuable 20 minutes of your studying. You'll be able to process information more quickly and you'll be able to work toward good response time and staying organized and on top of things.
Speed reading is far to valuable of a skill to be ignored. Take a little time and begin learning about what speed reading techniques can do for you.
