Types of GPS Devices

If you are shopping for a global positioning receiver, there are many GPS devices from which to choose.  In fact, there are so many available, that it can be confusing to narrow your search if you are new to GPS devices.  You want to select a GPS device appropriate to the activity for which you will be using the global positioning system. 

The Four Basic Types Of GPS Receivers

There are four main types of GPS devices and in each of these categories you will choose from a variety of options.  The four types of units are the PDA/GPS hybrid, the vehicle navigation system, the marine navigation system and the portable unit for outdoor activities.  You will want a portable GPS device or a PDA/GPS device, if you want to use the global navigation system away from your vehicle. 

How Will You Use Your GPS Receiver?

When you decide what type of GPS device that you need, you will then have to choose from the numerous functions that various devices provide.  For example, if you are a fisherman, you can choose the navigations capability with a fish finder tool. Will you be using your receiver while hiking or hunting? In this case you will want a unit that is waterproof, lightweight and has a lighted screen for reading in the dark. If you are traveling by car, you will probably want a device that can give audio driving instructions to you while you are driving.

Choosing Your Features

After you have determined the type of GPS receiving unit that you want and you are certain it is the best one for you, you must decide on the features you want with your device.  You will probably want to avoid GPS devices with all the extras, because when first learning, you probably wont need all these features.

Often, a GPS device may offer too many complex features and functions that you may never use. This could be confusing  for a novice.  Find a technological level where you feel comfortable. Start by looking at the simpler systems before moving on to the more advanced GPS devices. However, you probably don't want to choose the bare bones GPS receiver because you will want to have some fun with this technology.

Regardless what job or activity there is a GPS device that is suitable for your purpose.  No matter whether you are walking and using your PDA to find your favorite type of restaurant or you driving in your car looking for the same restaurant, the right global positioning device will help you to find the way.
